INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK OF MATTHEW

Author: The Apostle Matthew

Matthew's gospel was written approximately in A.D. 50's or 60's. it tells the story of Jesus' life, his birth, ministry, death and his resurrection.

Matthew is the first of four Gospels. The other three are Luke, Mark and John. One of Matthew's themes is that Jesus is the Messiah foretold by the Old Testament Prophets. His audience we believe was the Jewish community first and then to people who wanted to know more about Jesus. His audience was Jewish Christians who were transitioning into a new faith. Matthew's purpose was to show his audience that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God who fulfills all that Scripture says about him. It tells the story of God's plan to send Jesus, God's Son into the world to save people from their sins. Matthew's gospel was placed first in the New Testament because of its foundational structure to the Christian church.

Matthew begins with a lineage of Jesus' ancestors. He traces Jesus' ancestors to Abraham
